Maneyapanda Muthanna Somaiah-Hockey

Maneyapanda Muthanna Somaya a famous Kodava sportsperson was born on 12th April 1959 in Kodagu.He is a former Indian field hockey player from Kodagu, Karnataka.


He did his schooling in St Mary’s Boys high school and later he went to St.Xavier’s college.


  • He was a member of Indian hockey squad in many international games, including the team that won the Gold medal at the 1980 Moscow Summer Olympic Games.
  • Somaya played two Olympic Games, The 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympic Games, and 1988 Seoul Summer Olympic Games.
  • He was the captain of the 1988 Olympics team and was placed in 6th position.
  • He worked for Bharat Petroleum in Mumbai and was the general manager of corporate communications, Somaya was also the  Executive Director-Aviation at Bharat Petroleum Corp. Ltd.


  • In 2007 Somaya was awarded the Life Time Achievement award by the Petroleum Sports Promotion Board.
  • He is also a recipient of Arjuna Award
