Rear Admiral Iychettira Belliappa Uthaiah, VSM
Rear Admiral Iychettira Belliappa Uthaiah from Makkandur in Kodagu brought great prestige and pride to the district by rising to the postion of Rear admiral in the Indian Navy. He is the first Kodava to adore this high position in the Navy. So far, four Commodores from the community have served in the rank of Commodore in the Indian Navy. The current position held by Uthaiah is equivalent to that of Major General in the Indian Army.

Rear Admiral Iychettira Belliappa Uthaiah was commissioned into the Indian Navy in Nov 87. An alumnus of INS Shivaji Lonavala, he graduated with a B. Tech in Marine Engineering from the first batch of the Naval Engineering Course. His recent key Operational and Staff appointments include General Manager (Refit) at Naval Dockyard, Visakhapatnam and Principal Director (Ship Production). An alumnus of the Naval War College, he was awarded the VSM for distinguished service at Naval Dockyard and was instrumental in concluding major ship construction contracts with Russian and Indian Shipyards as Principal Director. His career profile includes two Training stints; one as the Training Commander (Cadets) at INS Shivaji and the other as the Commissioning Training Captain / Flotilla Captain at the Indian Naval Academy (INA). He is presently appointed as Assistant Director General (Technical), Project Seabird.
